The Granovitaya Chamber in Novgorod Kremlin

Фото 1
The Sovereign, or Granovitaya, Chamber is the only surviving structure of the architectural complex of the Sovereign's Court, built at the initiative of Novgorod Archbishop Euthymius II in the 1430s and 1440s. This monument of ancient Russian architecture is unique for its execution in the style of Western European Gothic.

The ceremonial halls of the chamber are covered with ribbed vaults with protruding ribs, which explains its second name, Granovitaya. The walls are adorned with frescoes, fragments of which, dating from the 15th and 19th centuries, can still be seen inside. In 1436, a rarity for that time, "ringing clocks," were installed on the facade. The upper hall was used for solemn ceremonies of the archbishop's household, while the ground floor, which housed the "Drinking Cellar," sometimes hosted festive banquets. The basement served for storing food and kitchen utensils, and some of its rooms were used as dungeons. Important events took place in the Sovereign's Chamber, such as the reception of ambassadors, sessions of the Novgorod "parliament," the Council of Lords, and the Sovereign Court, as well as ceremonial feasts.

The collection of decorative and applied arts of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve presented here is one of the most significant in Russia and spans the period from the 5th to the 19th centuries. The foundation of the collection consists of treasures from the cathedral and monastery sacristies of Veliky Novgorod, which was one of the largest centers of silverwork in Ancient Russia.
