The museum was founded in 1912. By the beginning of 2011, its collection numbered over 670,000 exhibits. Approximately one million people visit the museum each year. The main building features casts and significant exhibits from the collection, among which Egyptian figurines, Fayum portraits, Western European paintings, works by Impressionists, Dutch and Flemish artists, as well as masterpieces by the great Rembrandt stand out.
