In the early 20th century, a new estate appeared in Shchelykovo, which was unusual for Russian estate culture of that time. Established by the daughter of playwright M.A. Ostrovsky-Shatelen, it became a new landmark of Shchelykovo and over time transformed into a rare monument of estate culture and garden-park art of this period.
The center of the new estate was the Blue House, built in 1903 from a dismantled guest house according to the design of Maria Alexandrovna. This two-story log house, not clad either inside or outside, is adorned with decorative window frames and similar balustrades on terraces, balconies, and porches, executed in the Art Nouveau style. Later, it was painted blue, and the decorative elements were painted white.
After the revolution, these places avoided destruction. A significant role in this was played by the position of A.N. Ostrovsky's son-in-law, M.A. Shatelen, one of the authors of the GOELRO plan. Shchelykovo was transferred to the People's Commissariat for Education to organize a museum.
The further history of the estate for many years is connected with the Maly Theater and the Union of Theater Workers of Russia. Since 1928, famous actors have come here annually: Vera Pashennaya, Varvara Ryzhova, Evdokia Turchaninova, representatives of the Sadovsky dynasty, Mikhail Tsarev, Sergey Yursky, Nikita Podgorny, and many others.
In 2001, the Blue House was restored. A cultural and educational center was opened there, featuring a video hall, a literary and musical living room, and a cozy library with a reading room. The park tour begins at the Blue House, and in winter and spring, the Residence of Snegurochka operates here.
