In the 1880s, at the initiative of V.N. Sklifosovsky, the construction of the Clinical Town of Moscow University began at Devichye Pole. The first clinic in this town was the women's diseases clinic, headed by Professor V.F. Snegirev.

However, in the early 1890s, a problem arose regarding the insufficient training of gynecologists. In 1893, with the funds of P.G. Shelaputin, the Gynecological Institute was founded, also known as the Institute for the Improvement of Gynecologists named after A.P. Shelaputina. It was located at the corner of Bolshaya Pirogovskaya Street and Olsufyevsky Lane, and its architect was R.I. Klein.

P.G. Shelaputin was a well-known Moscow philanthropist and patron, the founder of the Balashikha Manufactory. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, he was referred to as "rich as Shelaputin." He invested his funds in the development of education and healthcare.

Interestingly, Shelaputin created the Gynecological Institute, guided by Dr. V.F. Snegirev, whom he had long supported. Shelaputin paid for Snegirev's education abroad and at Moscow University.

The Gynecological Institute was named after Shelaputin's mother, Alexandra Petrovna Shelaputina. In 1851, she became a widow with six children, the youngest of whom was only four years old, while Alexandra Petrovna was 32. She managed to raise her children and provide them with a good education.

Architect Roman Klein built many structures for Shelaputin, including designing V.F. Snegirev's house on Plyushchikha.

The institute building has a G-shaped form. It faces Bolshaya Pirogovskaya Street with a deep balcony adorned with four columns and an ornate railing. A garden separates the institute from the road. The corner of the building, marking the intersection of Rossolimo Street and Olsufyevsky Lane, is topped with a glass dome. Another wing faces the red line of the street with a risalit, attracting attention with large windows on the first two floors. The building's design was carefully thought out for the training of medical specialists.

The architecture of the institute resonates with the other buildings of the Clinical Town, located on the even side of Bolshaya Pirogovskaya Street.

After the Great Patriotic War, a more spacious facility was found for the clinical Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology named after V.F. Snegirev, and the freed building housed the Institute for the Exploration of New Antibiotics named after G.F. Gauze, belonging to the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
