In 1949, the Gallipoli obelisk in Gelibolu was seriously damaged due to an earthquake. For a long time, it remained partially destroyed until it was finally dismantled. In the 1950s and 60s, the residents of Gallipoli raised funds to restore the monument on the grounds of the Gallipoli Society at the Russian cemetery of Saint-Genèvieve-des-Bois near Paris, France. The restored monument, with minor changes, was a replica of the one destroyed in Turkey.

This is the most important and well-known monument in memory of the members of the Russian White Army, officers, soldiers, and Cossacks who fought against communism in the civil war, as well as the civilians who participated in the evacuation to Gallipoli.
