The Foros Church was built in 1892 thanks to the efforts of merchant of the first guild Alexander Grigorievich Kuznetsov, known as the "tea king." Before the appearance of the "Swallow's Nest" castle, the Church of the Resurrection of Christ was considered the symbol of southern Crimea.

The church was erected in memory of a miraculous salvation. Kuznetsov learned that the train carrying Emperor Alexander III and his family back from Livadia to St. Petersburg had derailed near the Borki station. The emperor and his relatives were unharmed, and Kuznetsov received permission to build a church in Foros as a sign of gratitude for this miraculous rescue.

Before the revolution, there was only one rector at the Foros Church, Father Pavel Undolsky, whose fate was tragic. For a long time, it was believed that he was exiled to Siberia and shot, but in fact, he suffered from tuberculosis. The revolution, the Civil War, the death from starvation of two children, the execution of his eldest son, and the closure of the church became deadly trials for him. The final blow was the Crimean earthquake of 1927, which fortunately did not damage the temple. Three months after this, Father Pavel passed away, and he was buried in the Greek church of the village of Skeli.

After his death, a tavern was opened in the empty church, which operated until the war. In 1942, during the battle for the Baidar Pass, twenty border guards under the command of A.S. Terletsky held the church, holding back a German column and destroying more than two hundred enemies.

Later, a restaurant was reopened in the church. N.S. Khrushchev once invited the Shah of Iran here, but he took it as an insult, and the meeting was canceled. In anger, Khrushchev ordered the restaurant to be demolished, but only the extensions were destroyed, while the church itself was used as a warehouse, which soon burned down. The church remained abandoned.

There is a local legend that the church was only attended to after Mikhail Gorbachev and his wife, who were vacationing in Foros, took notice of it.
