The monument to Saints Peter and Fevronia was solemnly opened on November 4, 2010, in honor of the Day of National Unity and the 90th anniversary of the Mari El Republic. It is located in Patriarch Square.

This monument, symbolizing the protection of family and marriage, is not just a sculpture but a composition combined with a fountain. Peter and Fevronia are depicted standing in a boat, surrounded by the swirling waters of a cascading fountain.

On the scroll in Peter's right hand, it is written: “Husbands, love your wives. Wives, submit to your husbands, as to the Lord.”

The monument is made of bronze, and its author is sculptor Andrei Kovalchuk.

According to legend, Prince Peter ruled in Murom in the early 13th century and married a simple peasant girl, Fevronia, who healed him from a serious illness. This unequal marriage caused discontent among the boyars, who sought to separate the couple. However, Peter chose to renounce power rather than his beloved. They went into exile together, but after unsuccessful intrigues, they returned to Murom and ruled the principality happily for a long time. The spouses died on the same day and hour, July 8, 1228, and after their death, their bodies miraculously ended up in one coffin, where they were buried.

In 1547, Peter and Fevronia were canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church, and the day of their death is now celebrated in Russia as the Day of Family, Love, and Fidelity.
