The main fountain and one of the key symbols of VDNH was created for its opening in 1954 by the design of Konstantin Topuridze and G. D. Konstantinovsky. It is located on the Central Alley, in the Square of Friendship of Peoples, next to the Main Pavilion. Sixteen female statues of the fountain represent 16 Union republics. Until 1956, there was a separate Karelo-Finnish SSR, which later became part of the RSFSR. Each of the republic figures is dressed in national costume and holds various fruits or plants. For example, Russia is depicted with a sickle on her head and wheat in her hands, Ukraine with a wreath, and Belarus with a tied scarf and an apple in her hand.
