The Feodorovsky State Cathedral served as the regimental church for the Combined Infantry Regiment and the personal convoy of the emperor, as well as a parish for the imperial family. During their stay in Tsarskoye Selo, the imperial family attended the cathedral on festive and Sunday days. In the cave temple, the emperor prayed during fasting days.

Ordinary parishioners could enter the cathedral only with invitation tickets issued by the palace commandant. The emperor often attended services in the cathedral, following a specific etiquette: at the side entrance, he and his family were greeted by the ktitor, Colonel D. N. Loman, and at the entrance, the palace commandant. The imperial family entered through the side door to the right choir, and the commandant followed them, taking a place in front of the Cossacks and lower ranks standing across the width of the cathedral. Sometimes the empress would pass into a separate prayer room, separated from the altar by an arch. Nicholas II and his family traditionally visited the Feodorovsky Cathedral before important events.

On June 13, 1933, the Leningrad Oblast Executive Committee decided to close the church. The mosaic was painted over, the upper church was converted into a cinema hall, and the screen was placed where the altar used to be. The lower church housed an archive of film and photo documents and a film storage. According to some reports, after the war, the agricultural institute set up a vegetable storage in the lower church. In 1962, the extensions to the cathedral were destroyed by explosions, and the remains of the building were used for training by climbers.
