The 'Skorokhod' Factory

Фото 1
In pre-revolutionary Russia, everyone knew that the best shoes were 'Skorokhods'.

The partnership of the St. Petersburg mechanical shoe production was founded on September 11, 1882. Two years later, it began producing the popular 'Reforma' brand shoes, lightweight summer shoes with low heels and a 'herringbone' pattern on the toe. These shoes became known as 'skorokhods'.

In 1896, at the Nizhny Novgorod Fair, the partnership received the right to use the image of the State Coat of Arms in its trademark.

Of course, 'Skorokhods' were counterfeited, and the company fought against cottage manufacturers, including through the courts.

The shoes of the partnership were exhibited at international fairs in Chicago (1893), Amsterdam (1894), and Paris (1900). By the late 1890s, they were successfully sold in Germany, competing with local manufacturers.

Since 1910, the word 'Skorokhod' became part of the official name of the company, appearing on store signs and as a stamp on the soles of the shoes.

In 1922, the factory was named after Ya. A. Kalinin, the head of the party cell and chairman of the factory committee, who was killed by the Socialist-Revolutionaries in 1919.

During the Siege of Leningrad, the 'Skorokhod' factory established the production of army boots (since 1942), as well as the production of machine gun belts and shells. The enterprise was awarded the Order of Lenin (1940) and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1947).

In 1962, the enterprise became the leading one in the Leningrad shoe association 'Skorokhod', which also included the factories 'Proletarskaya Pobeda', 1st and 2nd, 'Voskhoд', 'Zarya', the sports shoe factory, as well as the Leningrad, Vyborg, Gatchina, Luzhsky, Nevelsky, and Cherepovets shoe factories.

In the mid-1990s, AO 'Skorokhod' was the largest shoe factory in Russia. In 1998, the 'Skorokhod Children's Shoe Factory' was established on its basis.
