The open-air ethnographic museum 'Torun Maa' was established in 1987 thanks to the efforts of representatives of the national intelligentsia from among the Khanty and Mansi. It was important for them to present the culture of the Ob Ugrians in the regional capital on one of the seven sacred hills, near the confluence of the Ob and Irtysh rivers.

The name 'Torun Maa' translates from Mansi as 'Sacred Land'. The museum offers an authentic reconstruction of the lifestyle of the Ob Ugrians:

• 'Summer Camp of the Khanty of the Aghan River' includes a summer house, economic and hunting labaz, a smokehouse, a bread oven, and a fire pit;

• 'Winter Settlement of the Northern Mansi' consists of a winter house, economic and hunting labaz, as well as buildings for livestock;

• an active 'Sanctuary of the Ob Ugrians';

• a hunting trail with pressure traps for large and small game, game birds, and windbreaks. The atmosphere of a real camp is created by authentic items of material and spiritual culture of the Khanty and Mansi peoples. Currently, the museum's collection includes more than three thousand exhibits.

The museum coordinates scientific and expeditionary work in the field of ethnography of the indigenous small-numbered peoples of the district, organizes traveling and stationary exhibitions, and conducts educational activities. This contributes to the consolidation of the indigenous peoples of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Yugra, and the revival of their holidays and traditions. Every year, the museum offers visitors traditional holidays and rituals of the Ob Ugrians, as well as seminars, master classes, activities for children, lectures, and excursions for various categories of visitors.
