In 1894, the building of Catherine's Women's Gymnasium was erected in Rostov-on-Don, named after the church that appeared there in 1897. The project was designed by the famous Rostov architect Nikolai Alexandrovich Doroshenko. The gymnasium was located on Pushkinskaya Street and was considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. This educational institution for girls was very popular in pre-revolutionary Rostov-on-Don.

After the Bolsheviks came to power, the gymnasium was closed, and the building was repurposed for industrial and economic courses called "POLYGLOT." Later, it housed school No. 2. The church that was associated with the gymnasium was looted and destroyed.

In 1940, the building was transferred to the armed forces, but soon fell into disrepair and was completely burned down during World War II. Thus, the city lost one of Nikolai Doroshenko's creations. Today, a park named after Gorky occupies this site.
