The Palace of Princess Gagarina

The Crimean city of Alushta attracts not only with its wonderful weather and nature but also with numerous architectural monuments, among which the palace of Princess Gagarina stands out. The project of this building was developed by the famous architect Pyotr Nikolaevich Krasnov, who at that time was the chief architect of Yalta and worked on commissions for the royal family.

The history of the estate begins in the early decades of the 19th century, and among its famous guests were poets such as Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, Vladimir Andreyevich Zhukovsky, and Alexander Sergeyevich Griboedov. In the middle of the century, the estate passed into the possession of Princess Gagarina, the widow of the well-known governor-general Alexander Ivanovich Gagarin, who died in clashes with the princes of Upper Svanetia. For a long time, she made no changes to the appearance of the estate, but at the age of seventy, she decided to build a new palace. In 1902, architect Krasnov began work on the project, and by 1907, the palace was fully constructed.

The new palace, built in the Romanesque style, is still considered one of the most beautiful buildings on the peninsula. Materials from Europe were used for its construction, including Venetian glass for the stained glass windows and tiles for the roof. As a result, surrounded by magnificent nature, the palace resembled a fairy-tale tower. However, the owner did not have long to enjoy her creation, as she soon passed away after the completion of the construction and was buried in the estate's church. During the Soviet era, many elements of the estate were lost, and the palace itself fell into disrepair, but it has survived to this day and continues to amaze with its rare style for Russia.
