One of the oldest stone buildings in Irkutsk is the temple dedicated to the Savior Not Made by Hands, founded in 1706. The history of this temple begins around 1672, when a wooden church was built on this site. The exact date of the parish's founding is unknown, but it is known that on September 3, 1716, the first church burned down. By that time, the construction of the stone temple had already been completed, and it was decided not to restore the wooden church. A few decades later, a stone bell tower was added to the ancient part of the temple, built in the traditional quadrangular shape, which became a model of architecture of that time.

In the early 19th century, the temple was adorned with magnificent frescoes both inside and out. These frescoes are considered the oldest among Siberian churches. They are not just fragments of biblical scenes, but full-fledged artistic compositions. Unfortunately, the interior frescoes suffered greatly during the Soviet era and have not survived, but the images on the outer walls were successfully restored and continue to amaze with their beauty.

During the Soviet period, the temple was nearly destroyed after the Bolsheviks came to power, but it survived the Civil War and was closed. Various organizations, a shoe workshop, and even communal apartments were housed in the building, which nearly led to its destruction. In 1960, the temple faced the threat of demolition again, but instead, a decision was made to restore it. Only in 2006 was the temple returned to the church, and large-scale restoration work began in 2010, thanks to which the temple now looks magnificent again.
