In the vast expanses of Russia, many interesting and unexplored things are hidden, but the burial site of Ukrainian Hetman Petro Dorofeievich Doroshenko at the entrance to the ancient village of Yaroslavets in the Moscow region surprises many tourists. Today we will tell you about the life of this talented commander of the Zaporozhian Cossacks and how his grave ended up in the center of Russia.

Petro Dorofeievich Doroshenko was born in 1627 in the small Ukrainian town of Chyhyryn. His father was a punitive ataman of the Zaporozhian Cossack army, but this did not give Petro any privileges among his peers. He became known due to Bohdan Khmelnytsky's uprising, which earned him the rank of colonel and fame beyond Zaporozhzhia.

Doroshenko proved himself not only as a good commander but also as a skilled politician. He was elected hetman of Right-Bank Ukraine and managed to effectively subordinate these territories to himself. Moreover, he tried to shift the struggle to the left bank of the Dnieper and sought to unite Ukraine under his leadership. However, as is often the case with ambitious individuals, he lost the support of the Cossacks. Ultimately, his rule ended not as he had planned. The hetman had to resign and swear allegiance to the Russian crown, after which he found himself in Russia. Fyodor Alexeyevich appointed him as a voivode in Khlynov, and Sofia Alexeyevna granted him the Moscow village of Yaroslavets instead of a salary.

In 1682, Doroshenko retired and from 1684 lived in Yaroslavets for 13 years, where he died on November 19, 1698, and was buried. Three chapels were built over his grave. The first fell into disrepair and was rebuilt in 1844, the second was destroyed during the Soviet era, and only in our time was it restored. Petro Dorofeievich was married three times and left many descendants, among whom was Natalia Goncharova, the wife of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin. In modern Ukraine, the name of Hetman Doroshenko is widely known and honored at the state level.
