House Church of Cyril and Methodius in the Former Theological Seminary Building in Tambov

Фото 1
Throughout the 19th century, the building was repeatedly expanded and reconstructed, and only by the end of the last century did it acquire its modern appearance. The main facade stretches along Naberezhnaya Street from Dubovaya, now Komsomolskaya, to Seminariskaya, now Leningradskaya. In 1909, the diocese began the reconstruction of the main building and the construction of a separate building for the house church of Cyril and Methodius under the guidance of architect V.I. Freiman. The later addition of a third floor and a corner building with a church topped by a dome disrupted the symmetry and elegance of the original design, altering its strict style. The construction of the seminary, which began in the late 18th century, was completed in the early 20th century.

The architectural ensemble combines three structures created in different eras and styles. This complex, which has preserved its uniqueness and character, attracts attention with its severity and beauty of forms. Nowadays, the old part has hardly changed, except for the bricked-up windows on the northern facade on the first two floors. The most significant alteration occurred in the building on Leningradskaya Street, where the two-story space of the former church has been divided by a new ceiling. Decorative elements corresponding to modern use have been added to the interiors. The entrance area is highlighted by a protruding volume with a balustrade on the second-floor balcony. In the central risalit, the windows on the second and third floors are arched with a keystone, and the pilasters adorn the piers: they are yellow on the second floor and white on the third. A cornice runs between the first and second floors. The first floor is distinguished by rustication around its entire perimeter. In the side parts of the building, the windows are rectangular with moldings, and on the second floor, they are more massive.

The southern facade of the wing is symmetrical and decorated with an attic featuring oval windows and a keystone. The attic is highlighted by a base and cornice, while the rhythm of the wall is set by pilasters. The facade is completed with small pediments. The eastern side of the wing is adorned with a semi-rotunda topped by a dome, the finishing of which corresponds to the face facades. The courtyard facade has a simpler decor: the corners of the risalits are decorated with pilasters, and the base is painted dark burgundy and highlighted by rustication.

The interior space follows a strict and clear layout. The grand three-flight staircase, wide four-meter corridors, and spacious rooms on the first two floors, which housed classrooms and dormitories, have been preserved.

The construction of the theological seminary building made a significant contribution to the architecture of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The building plays an important role in urban planning, occupying a worthy place in the landscape and not getting lost among the churches. Currently, it houses the educational building of Tambov State Technical University. The former theological seminary is a monument of architecture, history, and an object of cultural heritage of regional significance in the Russian Federation.
