The building project was developed by architects Valdovsky-Varganek V.B., Domontovich K.K., Korzhitsky P.I., and Shkatelov P.V., choosing the pseudo-baroque style. Currently, this building houses the Astrakhan State Conservatory.

The Mariinsky Women's Gymnasium in Astrakhan was transformed in 1867 from a first-class women's school that had existed since 1860. At the end of the 19th century, a decision was made to construct a new building for the gymnasium, and in 1895, fundraising began. The largest donors were I.I. Gubin and A.N. Zakharova. The main building of the gymnasium, designed by architect K.K. Domontovich, was constructed at the corner of Moscow and Smolensk streets from 1905 to 1910. The gymnasium also housed the house church of St. Alexandra the Martyr.

The three-story brick building combines elements of pseudo-baroque and architectural decor. The facade of the building features harmonious proportions, a faceted corner, and a dome-shaped roof, while the window and door openings are executed in the Russian style.
