The Vereshchagin House in Cherepovets

Фото 1
In the very center of Cherepovets, at the confluence of the Yagorba and Sheksna rivers, stands a house where great Vologda natives were born, leaving their mark in history. This is the only memorial house-museum in the world that preserves the spirit of the famous Vereshchagins. The estate complex offers a picturesque view of the Cherepovets port, which was visited by journalists from "Komsomolskaya Pravda".

The estate belonged to Vasily Vasilyevich Vereshchagin Sr., the leader of the county nobility. He and his wife had 11 children, but four of them died in childhood. The brothers Vasily and Nikolai gained the most fame, leaving a bright mark in art and science.

Nikolai became the founder of the dairy industry, improving the lives of Russian peasants, while Vasily became famous as an artist, showcasing the horrors of war.

The Vereshchagin house has undergone many changes: in the 1850s it was sold to a merchant who rented out part of the second floor. A hundred years later, it housed communal apartments, and only in 1984 did the building become a museum. Later, it was almost demolished to make way for a highway to a new bridge, but the cultural community defended the house, and the highway and bridge were relocated.

In 2019, the residents of Cherepovets developed a reconstruction project for the estate, which won a competition by the Ministry of Construction. The cultural heritage site received funding, and by November 2020, the updated "Vereshchagin Quarter" opened to visitors.

The park area of the Vereshchagin house-museum is pleasant to be in: among the trees and flowerbeds, gravel paths are laid, there is a shady gazebo, benches, and lanterns, as well as a wooden playground for children.

Near the preserved carriage house stands a life-sized figure of a cow and a carriage. The area around the museum has been improved: the facade has been painted, a carved fence has appeared, wooden structures have been restored, and historical wooden walkways have been laid.
