The House Where I.S. Turgenev Lived

Фото 1
The house on Ostozhenka was built in 1819 by titular advisor D.N. Fedorov. The construction took place on a plot purchased from Lieutenant General K.F. Knorring, whose property burned down in the fire of 1812. The wooden mansion in the Empire style, with a six-column portico and seven windows on the facade, became a typical example of Moscow construction after the fire. Like many at that time, Fedorov rented out the house.

In 1826, the Aksakov family moved in, headed by the future famous writer Sergey Aksakov. In 1829, the house was rented by Moscow nobleman N.V. Levashov, a participant in the Patriotic War of 1812 and a friend of Pushkin.

In 1833, the house was purchased by official Nikolai Loshakovsky and rented out to chamberlain M.M. Sontsov, whose wife was Pushkin's aunt. In the 1830s, the house was rented by councilor Alexander Bakunin, a classmate of Pushkin at the Lyceum. In 1838, Colonel Fyodor Tolstoy, known for his vivid adventures and friendship with Pushkin's circle, lived here.

After the Tolstoys, Major General Andrey Bogdanovsky, a hero of the 1812 war, settled in the house. His portrait is located in the Military Gallery of George Dow in the Winter Palace.

On September 16, 1840, the house was occupied by Varvara Turgeneva. Ivan Turgenev, returning from Berlin, often visited here. After his mother's death in 1850, he lived in the house for more than two months, meeting friends and working on literary works.

In 1852, the house was rented by Elena Krivtsova, the widow of Pavel Krivtsov. She spent the last three years of her life here. In the 1860s, the house was home to the family of Andrey Baratynsky, who was passionate about classical music.

In 1891, Leonid Chichagov moved in with his family. He left his military career to serve the church and took monastic vows under the name Seraphim. In 1937, he was repressed, and in 1997, he was canonized.

In the late 19th century, a shelter named after Grand Duke Sergey Alexandrovich was opened in the house. After the 1917 revolution, the house was redesigned into communal apartments, which were vacated in 1974. Until the end of the 2000s, the organization 'Sportinterprom' was located here.

In 2007, it was decided to create the I.S. Turgenev Museum in the house, which became a branch of the State Museum of A.S. Pushkin. By the 200th anniversary of Turgenev's birth, the building was restored: the foundation and structures were reinforced, and the interiors and facades were restored. The museum became accessible to visitors with limited mobility thanks to an elevator. The project received an award at the 'Moscow Restoration, 2019' competition.
