Merchant traditions were among the most significant in pre-revolutionary Russia, which gradually transformed from a noble empire into a trading one after Napoleon's invasion. Over a hundred years of Soviet power led to much being forgotten, but the memory of the Eliseev family remained strong and has survived to this day. Many of you have probably heard of the Eliseevsky store or other places associated with this family. Today, I will tell you about one of the most beautiful mansions in St. Petersburg, which was built at the request of the Eliseev brothers and belonged to them.

At the beginning of the last century, the Eliseev brothers were among the most successful entrepreneurs. Thanks to their efforts, the family's wealth grew, and it was decided to erect a new palace to house the Brothers Eliseev Merchants' store. The design of the building was entrusted to the famous architect Gavriil Vasilyevich Baranovsky, who worked wholeheartedly and was able to satisfy the clients. The palace was built in just two years and was executed in the Art Nouveau style with elements of eclecticism. It features a complex composition of facades with numerous architectural details, majestic pylons, and magnificent sculptures symbolizing science, trade, art, and industry. The interior spaces also amaze with their beauty, which is hard to describe in words.

Initially, the building was used for the store, which occupied an entire floor, the second floor housed a bank, commercial courses, and a free hall for rent for performances, while the basement contained warehouses. After the Bolsheviks came to power, the building was confiscated, and the store became state-owned, with almost none of the previous variety of goods remaining. In the following decades, the premises were used for various purposes, from a theater venue to offices, and only in 2012 did a store reopen there. More than a hundred years have passed since the building's foundation, but it still bears the name of its first owners, and even during the Soviet years, the townspeople referred to it as Eliseevsky.
