Since the late 19th century, Moscow began to transform into the main business center of the Russian Empire. Important commercial issues were resolved here, large contracts were signed, and future deals were discussed. The city attracted not only workers from the regions but also merchants and traders. By the early 20th century, Moscow's population exceeded one million people. Housing became a necessity, but real estate prices were high. During this time, income-generating houses began to gain popularity.

One of the most impressive was the house of merchant Yakov Filatov, built by architect Valentin Dubovsky. He infused the building with Gothic motifs, unusual for Moscow at that time. The sculptures of knights, "guarding" the peace of the residents, particularly drew attention. Against the backdrop of Moscow's low-rise buildings, Filatov's house resembled a medieval castle. Inside, the building was no less luxurious: an elevator in a transparent shaft, huge mirrors and stained glass in the entrance, marble staircases with oak railings, all of this created an atmosphere of a noble estate.

The apartments were striking in size, with 5-6 rooms including separate bedrooms for the servants. However, such housing could only be afforded by members of the upper class, as the rent was expensive. After the events of 1917, Filatov's house was nationalized. Initially, it was planned to convert it into communal apartments, but eventually, the apartments were occupied by high-ranking Bolsheviks.

Notable figures such as Lenin's associate Grigory Zinoviev and Nikolai Podvoisky, the creator of the Red Army star and initiator of the Order of the Red Banner, lived here. Over the next 70 years, the house did not undergo significant renovations, although some interior elements created by Dubovsky were lost. Nevertheless, this building on Arbat still remains one of the landmarks of the capital.
