Two-story residential houses with Empire-style facades, located along the red line of the street and surrounded by a low stone fence with gates, once formed the wealthy estate of merchant Pyotr Ardalyonovich Kotelnikov. In the Leather Sloboda, he had two large properties. Pyotr Kotelnikov arrived in Moscow in 1810 from Putivl in the Kursk province with his young wife, who soon passed away. In 1826, he became a merchant of the 2nd guild, and by 1830, he was trading in calico and owned a calico factory. In 1833, he was granted the title of hereditary honorary citizen. He died in 1836 from a cold.

The left house was rebuilt by Kotelnikov from 17th-century chambers, while the right one was raised by a second floor. Both buildings acquired the same facade decoration, although they retained different floor divisions. Such paired compositions are characteristic of late classicism and are rarely found in Moscow. After the death of Pyotr Ardalyonovich, his son Sergey Petrovich lived in the house, and his grandson Nikolai Sergeevich was born there.

In the early 20th century, the houses were used as a shelter for incoming children. The shelter was founded by the Imperial Philanthropic Society in 1847 in the Serpukhov part and was named 'Serpukhov Shelter for 100 Incoming Children.'
