The House of S. A. Kallistratov

Фото 1
The house that belonged to Semyon Akimovich Kallistratov is one of the architectural gems of Saratov. After moving to the city in 1911, the architect purchased a plot of land at the intersection of Volskaya and Malaya Kostrizhnaya streets (now Pushkin Street). By 1913, he completed the construction of a spacious three-story brick building designed according to his own project. The house was distinguished by its elegance and was adorned with stucco floral ornaments, giving it a special sophistication. Part of the building was rented out, for example, to the Yalymov hotel, while the architect lived there with his wife, Yevgeniya Vladimirovna Teshkovskaya, and their children, Nikolai and Natalia.

Semyon Akimovich Kallistratov was a renowned architect whose work significantly influenced the architectural appearance of Saratov. Born in 1874 in the village of Korenka in the Rylsk district of the Kursk province, he received his education at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, where he studied engineering. After returning to Russia, Kallistratov began his professional career in Novorossiysk, where he became the city architect and created several significant projects, including the city administration building.

In 1918, the architect's life underwent tragic changes: his wife died, and he faced the process of "tightening," when part of his house was handed over to other tenants. In 1922, Kallistratov received an invitation for a high position in Moscow, which forced him to leave Saratov. His house became a place for various city institutions, and later it housed a school for blind children, which still operates there today. The former mansion of Kallistratov has been recognized as a cultural heritage site of regional significance, highlighting its historical and architectural value.

After moving to Moscow, Semyon Akimovich continued his administrative work, and in 1948, after retiring, he returned to Novorossiysk, where he lived until the end of his life. The architect passed away in 1966, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire and amaze contemporaries.

The Kallistratov family made a significant contribution to various spheres of public life. Sofia Vasilievna Kallistratova, Semyon's sister, was a well-known Soviet lawyer and human rights activist. She actively participated in defending the rights of Soviet dissidents, making her figure important in the history of the human rights movement in the USSR. Sofia Vasilievna was born in 1907 into a priest's family and showed an interest in public activities from a young age. Her life and work became an example of resilience and dedication to the ideals of justice, making her one of the significant figures in the history of the human rights movement.
