Gogol's house in Baden-Baden can be found thanks to the memorial plaque in Russian and German. It is located on the wall of the old hotel "Darmstadt Courtyard," where Nikolai Vasilyevich stayed in 1836. This building is now part of the City Hall complex.

In early July 1836, Gogol arrived in Baden-Baden to improve his health. This city was known for its healing waters, which helped with stomach ailments. Additionally, Alexandra Osipovna, a long-time acquaintance of Gogol and a lady-in-waiting at the imperial court, was there, to whom he felt drawn. He sought to dispel his loneliness and longing for his homeland, and travel always brought him relief.

Initially, Gogol planned to spend only three days in Baden-Baden. However, in a letter to his mother, he explained that he stayed for three weeks because he met several acquaintances from St. Petersburg. He liked the city for its wonderful location and many places for walks, but he could most often be seen in the meadow near Stephanie-Bad.

Nikolai Vasilyevich returned to Baden-Baden several times for negotiations with the publisher of the magazine "Europa," where his works were published in German translation. During such visits, he read chapters from "Dead Souls" to his friends.
