The memorial "I.S. Turgenev House Museum" at Ostozhenka, 37, opened an exhibition in 2018 dedicated to the life and work of the writer after a historical reconstruction. This house was home to I.S. Turgenev's mother, Varvara Petrovna, from 1840 to 1850. The Empire-style mansion, which has miraculously survived, is a true gem of literary Moscow. In the 1960s, the house was recognized as a cultural heritage site due to the fact that Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev lived here, and the estate and its inhabitants became prototypes for the story "Mumu." In 2007, a decree from the Government of Moscow was issued to create the museum "I.S. Turgenev House" at the address: Ostozhenka St., 37/7. The implementation of the large-scale reconstruction project became possible after the publication of the Presidential Decree of the Russian Federation in 2014, celebrating the 200th anniversary of I.S. Turgenev's birth. With the support of the Government of Moscow, the Department of Culture, and the Department of Cultural Heritage of the city, a scientific restoration of the mansion and reconstruction of the surrounding area were carried out, as well as the creation of a new museum exhibition.

The exhibition features items of visual and decorative applied arts, such as paintings, graphics, porcelain, bronze, fabrics, furniture, and lighting fixtures, as well as sculptures, books, documents, manuscripts, and photographs. Among the exhibits, one can see lifetime portraits of I.S. Turgenev, first publications and editions of his works, illustrations for them, household items, portraits, and views from the Turgenev era, as well as works by contemporary artists. Special attention is given to memorial items belonging to the writer and his close ones, including more than ten autographs.
