F.I. Shalyapin House Museum

The house where Fyodor Shalyapin spent his last years before emigrating to France was furnished and renovated under his personal supervision. During this time, gas, plumbing, and a telephone were installed in the rooms, which was a rarity and expensive even in Moscow at that time.

Shalyapin often hosted well-known creative and public figures of that era, such as Maxim Gorky, Leonid Andreyev, Alexander Kuprin, Valentin Serov, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Ivan Bunin, and Konstantin Stanislavsky.

In 1978, on the eve of the 1980 Olympics, the building was slated for demolition, but thanks to the efforts of a group of artists and Shalyapin's first wife, it was decided to turn it into a museum. Fyodor Ivanovich often reminisced about his home and deeply missed the Russia he left behind.

"Our mansion was furnished simply but solidly; its main decoration was my father's library, mostly collected by A.M. Gorky. The luxury in our house was a billiard table, bought by my mother for my father, who was fond of the game," recalled the artist's daughter, Irina Shalyapina.
