Once, a famous Russian poet V.A. Zhukovsky visited an old house on Lower Lazaretnaya Street, now Semenovskaya, 14. He was a guest of Fyodor Alekseevich Semenov, an outstanding Kursk astronomer, mechanic, and meteorologist.

In this merchant's house with a semi-basement, F.A. Semenov was born and lived until his death on April 18, 1860. The house had a mezzanine and two small balconies facing west and east, from which the self-taught astronomer observed the stars through a homemade telescope. The stone basement was plastered and painted white, while the walls were covered with wooden planks. Today, a white marble plaque on the house reads: "In this house was born, lived, and worked the self-taught astronomer Semenov Fyodor Alekseevich (1794-1860)."

The residence of the renowned scientist ensured the house a long life, and its walls have seen many prominent individuals. F.A. Semenov was acquainted with actor M.S. Shchepkin and writer N.A. Polevoy, as well as S.T. Aksakov, S.N. Glinka, M.P. Pogodin, and D.M. Perevoshchikov.

Since 1813, while still young, F.A. Semenov began conducting meteorological observations in Kursk. In 1825, he independently built a telescope with 40x magnification and began systematically observing the stars. In March of that year, he first saw the craters of the Moon, the moons of Jupiter, and the rings of Saturn. In 1850, he published a work titled "Map of the Total Solar Eclipse, which will be visible in Europe on July 16(28), 1851" in "Geographical Notices" and an article on the same topic in the magazine "Moskvityanin." His precise calculations disproved the opinion of the French scientist Arago regarding the impossibility of a total solar eclipse in Europe in the 19th century.

Perepelitsyn, who observed the solar eclipse in Bobrintse, described F.A. Semenov as a man about 60 years old, tall, thin, wearing an old-fashioned blue frock coat and boots. His face, lined with wrinkles, expressed deep thought, and his eyes indicated self-reflection.

In 1856, F.A. Semenov published a work titled "Table of the Time of Lunar and Solar Eclipses from 1840 to 2001" in the "Notes of the Russian Geographical Society," for which he received a gold medal from the society. His scientific works were recognized as outstanding.

F.A. Semenov is also known as a meteorologist, publishing his observations in the "Kursk Provincial Gazette" since 1838 and in capital publications. A street, a public library, an observatory, and a school were named in his honor.

In September 1986, the Kursk City Executive Committee decided to restore house No. 14 on Semenovskaya Street. In 1987-1988, the house was restored, and it now houses the memorial museum of F.A. Semenov and inventor A.G. Ufimcev.
