At the intersection of M. Gorky and Bebel streets stands a large two-story house with a corner balcony and elegant stucco on the facades. This building, numbered 15, belonged to the famous merchant N.V. Gladkov and is considered one of the best-preserved merchant houses in the city.

The Gladkov family was known in the city not only for their wealth but also for their generous charity. For example, N.V. Gladkov could afford to establish a house church in the neighboring building of the city real school. Therefore, it is not surprising that the 'Gladkov house,' as it is called by the locals, was spacious and ornate. Even today, it attracts the attention of passersby with its architecture, rich but time-worn stucco, and the wonderfully preserved granite column at the entrance gates, which protected the stone arch from the wheels of carriages.

During World War I, the building was used as a military hospital. After the revolution, it housed the regional Cheka for some time, and then the 74th combined evacuation hospital. After its closure in the early 1920s, the building was handed over to the regional health department to open a hospital for workers. However, in 1923, the building was given to the labor faculty to accommodate a student dormitory for 200 places. In 1927, after the closure of the labor faculty, a dormitory for unemployed mothers with children opened here.

Before the Great Patriotic War, the former merchant house housed a children's hospital. The building was not damaged during the war, and after the city was liberated, it housed the apparatus of the Kursk regional committee of the VKP(b) for some time. In the autumn of 1943, A. Mikoyan spoke here at a meeting regarding the delivery of grain by collective farms and state farms for government supplies.

In the late 19th century, a young cook named Deyka Vinnikova, who would later become the famous singer Nadezhda Plevitskaya, worked in this house. In the early 20th century, Vera Mukhina, a relative of the Gladkovs, lived here and later became a well-known sculptor, the author of the composition 'Worker and Kolkhoz Woman.' She painted her first portrait of the maid Anyuta in this house.

Until 1955, this building housed maternity hospital No. 3, and after its relocation to a new building on Lenin Street (now maternity hospital No. 1), the regional anti-tuberculosis dispensary with a hospital was established here.

Currently, the building houses a medical college, formerly a medical school, continuing the tradition of housing various medical institutions in the former merchant house.
