The Gorstkin House, located at the intersection of Pesheya and Sadovaya streets, was built in 1838 by Ivan Nikolayevich Gorstkin, a famous Decembrist and theatrical figure. He erected it on the site of an old wooden house that belonged to Pyotr Andreyevich Gabbe, a participant in the Patriotic War of 1812 and a close acquaintance of the poet P. A. Vyazemsky. In 1846, the building was acquired by Elizaveta Ivanovna Arapova, the wife of Major Andrey Nikolayevich Arapov. In 1874, the house passed to their sons, Ivan and Nikolai Arapov, who were married to the daughters of Natalia Nikolayevna Pushkina-Lanskaya, Alexandra and Elizaveta. In the Penza Art Gallery, one can see portraits of Major A. N. Arapov, created by the artist D. I. Antonelli, as well as portraits of his daughters and granddaughters painted by the academician of painting I. K. Makarov. On May 5, 1875, the building was acquired by the State Bank for the Penza branch. In 1913, the apartment of the bank manager M. N. Rudzyevich, a well-known chess player, was where the outstanding Russian chess player and world champion A. A. Alekhine played. After the revolution, a labor exchange was located here, and in recent years, the building housed the May Day ROVD of the city of Penza.
