House of the Serebryakov Brothers (Volgograd)

Фото 1
At the intersection of Sovetskaya and Komsomolskaya streets stands a historic building known as the "House of the Serebryakov Brothers," which is a protected cultural heritage site. Although this name is frequently encountered, its origin remains unclear. In Tsaritsyn, entrepreneurs Grigory and Alexander Nestorovich Serebryakov indeed lived, owning several surviving structures, including the former Women's Gymnasium No. 2 (now School No. 83) and the former Nail Factory on Gogol Street. However, it is unknown whether the house at Komsomolskaya, 4 was their residence or rented out.

Today, the Serebryakov House, located at a wide intersection, is a vivid example of Tsaritsyn architecture. Unfortunately, over its 120 years of existence, it has undergone multiple reconstructions, partially destroyed during the Battle of Stalingrad, and suffered barbaric alterations in the post-war years. Likely, only two facade walls remain from the original house, and those have been altered. Despite this, the preserved elements hold significant historical value for Volgograd.

In the early years after the war, the house was used as a residential building. In the 1960s, it was repurposed to house a skin and venereal disease dispensary. It is logically difficult to explain why such a medical institution ended up in such a prominent location. Photographs from the 60s and 70s show that the entrance from the corner was bricked up, and access to the building was from Sovetskaya and Komsomolskaya streets. In the late 80s, the dispensary was vacated, and at that time, the first major renovation took place, destroying all the internal layout of the building.

Recently, the building was once again reconstructed: new arches were hidden behind facades with black glass, and the house received a new color scheme. Restorers attempted to restore the historical skylights on the roof and the balcony, as well as the entrance from the corner. Overall, the restoration work carried out in the early 21st century can be considered successful; the building has acquired a solemn appearance that distinguishes it against the backdrop of the street.
