After receiving the rank of rear admiral, the outstanding Russian naval commander and scientist Stepan Osipovich Makarov lived in St. Petersburg for six years, holding several high positions in the navy. Although he often had to travel for long periods, the official residence of his family remained at house number 7 on Mokhovaya Street.

This building, constructed in 1844, has survived to this day and for a long time served as a rental house. It now houses offices, which is quite common; however, the long-term residence of Admiral Makarov in this house at the end of the 19th century is still not commemorated even with a modest memorial plaque. The house itself is designed in a style close to the Empire, distinguished by its restrained beauty and good taste.
