The construction time of the building at Nosovskaya Street, 5, and its architect remain unknown. In the 1870s and early 1880s, the house belonged to merchant Ivan Alexandrovich Tolmachev, who was mentioned in the "Alphabet of Property Owners" of the Tambov City Administration for the year 1871. In 1882, he received permission to reconstruct the house on his estate.

According to documents from the Tambov City Administration, in the mid-1880s and early 1890s, the stone houses, wings, and shops passed to the sons of I.A. Tolmachev, merchants Alexander and Nikolai Ivanovich Tolmachev. The house was used as an income property, renting out premises. In 1884, the premises were rented by nobleman V. Blagonovsky for a theater for a year for 2000 rubles. It was planned to use the large hall at the corner of Gymnasium and Nosovskaya streets and the adjacent room, which had an entrance from the main staircase. Changes were anticipated: dismantling the wall between the rooms while preserving the iron ties, as well as reconstructing the chimneys. On August 27, 1884, the Technical and Construction Department of the Tambov Provincial Administration approved the renovation plan.

In 1891-1892, the house of the Tolmachev brothers housed a furniture store owned by merchant V.V. Shirokov. After the death of N.I. Tolmachev in 1894, Alexander Ivanovich became the sole owner of the property. In 1895, he applied to the Construction Department of the Tambov Provincial Administration for permission to install a power station at the corner of Nosovskaya and Gymnasium streets to illuminate his houses and the shops of other merchants.

In the 1910s, A.I. Tolmachev owned three stone houses, two shops, and a wing at the address: Gymnasium Street, 16/Nosovskaya, 7, as well as six shops at the market and forest docks beyond the railway.

In 1914, A.I. Tolmachev's house at the corner of Gymnasium and Nosovskaya streets housed a hotel owned by Ambarcum Borisovich Ter-Georgiyants.

In 1918, A.I. Tolmachev's houses were municipalized. During the Soviet era, various shops operated on the first floor of the house. Currently, shops are also located on the first and second floors.
