Income House of Merchant M. Kochubey

Фото 1
Together with his mother and two sisters, poet Vladimir Mayakovsky rented a four-room apartment on the first floor of house 36 on Bolshaya Presnenskaya Street (now Krasnaya Presnya Street, house 36, building 1). It was here that he created many of his famous works, such as "Listen" (1914), "War is Declared" (1914), and "I and Napoleon" (1915). The latter poem begins with the line: "I live at Bolshaya Presnya, 36, 24..." Mayakovsky also worked on the poem "Cloud in Trousers" (1915) in this house.

This apartment is the only surviving rental housing of the Mayakovsky family. The poet received his own housing, which was a room in a communal apartment on Lubyanka Passage, only in 1919. After moving to Moscow in 1906, the family frequently changed their residence. Mayakovsky moved to Bolshaya Presnenskaya Street at the age of 20 while studying at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. He occupied the smallest room, which contained a writing desk, a couch, a bookshelf with books, Viennese chairs, a coat rack, and his artistic supplies. His mother, Alexandra Alexeyevna, and sisters Lyudmila and Olga lived in the other rooms, while the fourth room was rented out to students or acquaintances. Due to the family's frequent relocations, the memorial setting of the apartment has not been preserved.

Currently, the building houses the museum "Apartment on Bolshaya Presnya," which is part of the State Museum of Vladimir Mayakovsky. Since 2017, it has hosted the exhibition "Daughter," dedicated to the poet's beloved, Ellie Jones, and their daughter, Patricia Thompson. The remaining spaces on the first floor are occupied by shops, while the upper floors contain apartments.

The house on Krasnaya Presnya is valuable not only as a memorial object but also as an example of early 20th-century architecture. The building is designed in the style of French Art Nouveau, characterized by symmetrical composition and concise decor. On the main facade, at the level of the second and fourth floors, there is a bay window, and on either side of it at the fourth and fifth floors, there are two vertical compositions with carved pilasters. The facade is adorned with a molded cornice with teeth and a meander, a Greek ornament.

The income house was built in 1905 according to the design of architect Osip Shishkovsky on the site of a wooden building. Different parts of the house have varying numbers of floors: a five-story building was constructed in 1904, and a year later, a six-story building was added in front of it, and they were combined. The main facade of the six-story section faces Krasnaya Presnya Street. The first floor of the house housed commercial premises, such as a dairy shop and a fabric store, while the semi-basement contained a fashion workshop. The remaining spaces were occupied by apartments.
