Date of opening and history of the building

The building, which now houses the Central Energy Customs, was erected in 1910. It is presumed that its project was developed by architect N. Zherikhov, although some sources mention the name G. Gelrikh. This five-story apartment building, owned by the merchant and philanthropist Evdokia Andronikovna Kostyakova, is designed in the neoclassical style. The facade is adorned with sculptural panels on ancient themes at the level of the second floor.

Famous residents and guests

This house was home to composer and pianist A. Goldenweiser, where Moscow musicians often gathered, as well as renowned composers S. Rachmaninoff, S. Taneyev, and N. Medtner. In the 1920s, Mikhail Bulgakov visited here to see his friend, artist B. Shaposhnikov, who created several remarkable museums, including Pushkin's apartment on the Moika in St. Petersburg and a museum on Dog Square dedicated to noble life (later demolished).

Interesting facts

Many events from Bulgakov's novella "Heart of a Dog" are associated with this street. For example, Professor Preobrazhensky first meets the dog Sharik and treats him to Krakow sausage at house No. 9. At that time, a "Tsentrohoza" store was located on the first floor of the building, from where the professor exited before meeting the frozen and hungry Sharik, who was watching him from across the street. Bulgakov describes how the professor buys sausage despite the questionable quality of the products in the store.
