Income House of the Bebutov Princes

Фото 1
The income house of the Bebutov princes was built in 1908-1909 by architect Gustav Augustovich Gelrich in the Art Nouveau style. It is one of the best works of the renowned architect.

The facade of the five-story building, standing on a high semi-basement, features three bay windows and is topped with a wavy cornice that harmonizes with the smooth surfaces of the upper floors, adorned with decorative tiles. The upper part of the central bay window is decorated with sculptural figures of a young man and woman holding wreaths of Glory. The elegant railings of the extended balconies on the second floor attract attention.

The house belonged to State Councillor Vladimir Grigorievich and his wife Rosalia Borisovna Bebutov. Their children, Grigory, Boris, Nina, and Tamara, were also co-owners. Until 1919, the entire family was engaged in the restoration of monasteries and architectural monuments in the Caucasus.

In the 1910s, the house was home to and hosted meetings of the theosophist Georgy Ivanovich Gurdjieff, a philosopher-mystic, composer, and traveler who founded the 'Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man.' His main work was dedicated to self-development, the growth of human consciousness, and existence in everyday life. Gurdjieff's teachings are often referred to as the 'Fourth Way.'

Gurdjieff was a cousin of Sergey Dmitrievich Merkuryev, a well-known Soviet monumental sculptor. For a time, Merkuryev's workshop was also located in this house on Rozhdestvensky Boulevard.

Before the revolution, the General Consulate of France was located in some of the building's premises.

After 1917, communal apartments were arranged in the house, and it remains residential to this day.

In 2018, the facades of the income house were restored. Specialists replaced the gutters, installed elements of the drainage system, treated wooden details with special compounds, and made a coating of galvanized steel. During the facade renovation, all surfaces were cleaned of dirt and dust, the stucco decor and plaster were cleaned, seams and cracks were repaired, and the cornices were restored and painted.
