In the mid-18th century, a plot on the banks of the Neglinka River, located between modern Neglinnaya Street and Petrovka, belonged to M.A. Dolgorukova. Later, it came into the possession of Maria Artemyevna Volynskaya, the daughter of A.P. Volynsky, who married Count Ivan Illarionovich Vorontsov. At that time, Vorontsov owned a vast estate between Rozhdestvenskaya and Petrovka, which by the end of the century was divided into smaller plots.

In the late 18th century, French merchant Dyklo built a classical-style house on the parapet of Kuznetsky Bridge with a high terrace that protected against river flooding. Later, the building passed to the family of merchant Stolbkov. After the fire of 1812, the house was rebuilt. Its facade with an eight-column Corinthian portico and pediment is captured in a lithograph by O. Kadol in 1834. A few years later, the terrace, which became unnecessary as the Neglinka was hidden in an underground collector, was dismantled.

For a long time, the house housed a hotel that changed names: "Leipzig," "Shora," "Russia," "France." Its proprietor was the famous restaurateur Jean Morel, creator of the "Hermitage" garden on Bozhedomka and co-founder of the "Hermitage" restaurant on Trubnaya Square. Notable guests included L.N. Tolstoy, composers A.K. Glazunov and M.A. Balakirev. The first floor featured shops, including the bookstore of I.D. Sytyn, the watch shop of P.K. Bure, and the tobacco shop of V.M. Bostandzhoglo. There was also a barbershop "Theodor," where A.P. Chekhov often got his hair cut.

In 1881, the building was reconstructed according to the design of architect A.E. Weber, introducing high central and side attics with stucco and figures of putti, which is why the house is called "the house with putti." The building was partially reconstructed two more times: in 1893 by architects S.V. Dmitriev and V.P. Gavrilov, and in 1914-1916 according to the project of L.A. Vesnin and S.I. Titov.

In the early 20th century, "the house with putti" belonged to Captain Zinaida Ivanovna Shorina, and before the revolution, it was co-owned by V.S. Shorina, E.S. Karkuzaki, N.S. Kuroyedova, A.S. and P.S. Turgenev.

During the NEP years, the "Moscow Worker" publishing house opened here. In the autumn of 1927, M.A. Sholokhov brought the manuscript of the novel "Quiet Don" here, after which the magazine "October" began publishing the first two books of the epic. In the 1930s, one of the stores of Torgsin was located in the house.

The building is protected by the state as a cultural heritage site of regional significance, while the structures of Kuznetsky Bridge underground have the status of a cultural heritage site of federal significance.
