On October 21, 2016, at a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, a decision was made to open the Dimitrievsky Male Monastery in Orenburg and appoint Hieromonk Varvara Sokolov as the abbot. This was done at the request of Metropolitan Benjamin of Orenburg and Saraktash. On November 8, 2016, on the feast day of Saint Great Martyr Dimitri of Thessalonica, an important event took place in the Orthodox life of Orenburg, the solemn opening of the male monastery.

On September 13, 1886, a second-guild merchant from Orenburg, Fyodor Petrovich Dyagterev, submitted a request to the City Administration. He reported that after the death of his brother Dimitri Dyagterev, a capital of 5,000 rubles remained, bequeathed for the construction of a church in Orenburg in the name of Saint Dimitri of Miracles. He asked the City Administration to allocate a plot for the construction of the church in the second part of the city, between quarters 272 and 273.

In January 1887, the City Duma granted permission to F.P. Dyagterev to allocate a plot for the construction of a new church in the name of Saint Great Martyr Dimitri of Miracles. In August 1887, the Construction Department issued a permit for construction, which began that same year and continued until 1890. In 1899, merchant Maxim Mokeyev financed the construction of the right chapel, and in 1900, with his funds, the left chapel was arranged.

In 1903-1904, a significant stage of construction of the Dimitrievsky Church was completed, and a new stone bell tower was erected. Until 1917, the church did not undergo reconstructions and remained in this form until its closure in the 1930s.

The church of Saint Great Martyr Dimitri of Thessalonica endured years of desolation when a cinema was placed within its walls. However, historical justice was restored, and the church is active again. It became one of the first in Orenburg to experience spiritual revival. In 1990, the church was returned to the Patriarchate. In the autumn of that same year, the Trinity chapel was consecrated again, and services began.
