For many years, the name of the outstanding Russian general Anton Ivanovich Denikin was banned, his reputation was distorted, and he was forgotten. However, time has passed, and now in Saratov, one can see a memorial plaque dedicated to this worthy man. Today, I will talk about Denikin's connection to the Saratov province and the installation of the memorial plaque in his honor.

Anton Ivanovich Denikin came from a humble family: his father, a former serf, rose to the rank of major but passed away early, and the future general had to earn a living from childhood. Denikin studied diligently and proved himself a hero during the Russo-Japanese War, although his units were not awarded guard regalia and were far from the capital. In 1907, he became the chief of staff of the 57th Infantry Reserve Brigade, stationed in Saratov, and spent several years there. Colonel Denikin lived modestly, with only his mother, and he had enough of a rented apartment at the intersection of streets that were later renamed. In 1910, he was transferred to the Kyiv Military District, where he even commanded a parade during the assassination attempt on Pyotr Stolypin, who is also considered a symbol of Saratov.

A century has passed since then, during which General Denikin became a leader of the White movement, found himself in exile, wrote valuable memoirs, and, after his death, returned to his homeland. In Saratov, they remembered him, preserving the building where his infantry brigade was located. In 2012, on the 140th anniversary of Anton Ivanovich's birth, it was decided to immortalize his memory. The main work on the installation of the plaque was carried out by the local university named after Stolypin, and the opening was held ceremoniously. The ceremony spoke much about General Denikin's merits, his significance for Russia, and that he deserves to stand alongside Pyotr Arkadyevich Stolypin.
