The Far Eastern Republic (FER) was a puppet state that existed in the Primorye and Eastern Siberia from 1920 to 1922. Its creation was initiated by the leadership of the RSFSR, and later, when it was no longer needed, the republic was dissolved.
The establishment of the FER was driven by political necessity. In early 1920, the Soviet government was engaged in combat on several fronts. In Central Asia, the Basmachi movement was gaining momentum, Denikin's troops remained combat-ready, the Soviet-Polish War was ongoing, and anarchists and bandits were active throughout the country. The situation in the Far East was complex.
The most serious threat in this remote region was the Japanese Empire. Having suffered almost no losses in World War I but also not gaining significant benefits, Japan sought to expand its territories at Russia's expense, deploying an expeditionary force of 100,000 troops for this purpose.
Under these conditions, it was decided to create a buffer state in the Far East. This idea appealed to both Lenin and the representatives of the Entente. Moscow needed to transfer more forces to the west, and the interveners considered this option the most acceptable due to disagreements within the coalition. The buffer state officially began to exist on April 6, 1920, although unofficially it had been in place since January 1920 after mass protests by the local population against foreign influence.
The Far Eastern Republic established a democratic form of government with the creation of a people's assembly, but the majority in parliament always belonged to the Bolsheviks. The political situation was under complete control of Moscow, and the economy of the FER was capitalist.
The residents greeted the emergence of the new country with good-natured irony, often interpreting the abbreviation 'FER' as 'Fairly Joyful Republic.'
After the withdrawal of foreign forces, the republic fulfilled its purpose. Lenin achieved his goal: the disagreements among the Entente members led to the recognition of the Far East as a compromise most acceptable for Russia. The FER was officially liquidated on November 15, 1922, and its territories became part of the RSFSR.
