Church of Zosima and Savvatiy in the Sarov Monastery

In 1745, the construction of the church in honor of the holy Zosima and Savvatiy of Solovki began, and it was consecrated in 1750. The church, located near the hospital cells, was named "Hospital Church." It was in this monastery hospital that the holy Seraphim, then still a novice Prokhor, spent three years in illness and witnessed the miraculous appearance of the Most Holy Theotokos with the apostles John the Theologian and Peter, who healed him. The funds for the construction of the church were collected by the healed ascetic himself, who also, being a skilled carpenter, made the altar from cypress wood for the temple. Here he received the Holy Mysteries until the end of his life.

In 1784, it was decided to move the temple to the northern slope to free up the area in front of the "Holy" gates. The church was built with the funds of Ivan Leontyevich Beketov and had two floors: on the lower level was the warm church of Zosima and Savvatiy, and on the second floor, a cold chapel in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The monastery leadership made efforts to arrange the church: the floors were laid with cast-iron tiles, and the iconostasis was gilded, entrusted to the peasant Nikifor Ilyin from the village of Khatuni in the Serpukhov district. In the altar was the altar made by the hands of the novice Prokhor Moshnin, the future holy Seraphim. The main altar was consecrated on August 16, 1787, and the upper altar in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord in 1789 during a visit to the monastery by the ruling archbishop.

During the Soviet era, the church was dismantled by hand in 1942 due to a lack of building materials.

Today, the church has been restored on its historical site. Preparations for construction began in February 2010, and the cross on the dome was raised on July 29, 2011. The great consecration of the church in honor of the holy Zosima and Savvatiy on the lower level took place on May 26, 2012. The upper level under the dome houses the church of the Transfiguration of the Lord. On December 21, 2012, Metropolitan Georgiy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas, along with the clergy of the Nizhny Novgorod diocese, conducted the rite of the great consecration of the church in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord, located in the rotunda of the church of the holy Zosima and Savvatiy, the Solovki miracle workers.
