Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bronitsy

The Presentation Church is located on top of a hill and is visible from afar. A wooden Presentation Church stood on this site for a long time. In 1769, a stone church with three altars was built in its place, dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary in the Temple, as well as to John the Baptist and Saint Catherine the Great Martyr. According to legend, Catherine II, returning from her coronation in Moscow, stopped at the Bronitsy way palace and climbed the hill, where she admired Novgorod with its numerous monasteries and churches. It is said that she ordered the construction of a church on the hill in honor of Saint Catherine the Great Martyr. From 1828 to 1832, the church building was completely rebuilt according to a design created by Y. Maksimovich in 1826 and handed over to the famous architect V. P. Stasov. During the reconstruction, Stasov preserved the walls, added niches, reinforced them, leveled the internal columns, and attached two Doric porticos. The building was topped with a dome on a faceted drum, and the bell tower was crowned with a spire 15 meters high. After the reconstruction, the church acquired a monumental appearance due to the porticos, although its dimensions remained modest: 26.3 meters in length and 19.1 meters in width. The reconstruction was financed by the economic committee of military settlements. At the foot of the hill, next to the church, a parade ground for military formations was arranged. Until 1874, the church was under the management of the military department. In 1972, the monument was restored according to the project of architect L. A. Ashimikhina with funds from the All-Union Society for the Protection of Monuments.
