The village of Varezh is located on the banks of the Oka River. In the land books of the Murom district from 1628-1630 and in the records of the Ryazan diocese from 1676, there are no mentions of the village of Varezh or the Varezh parish. The villages that later became part of the Varezh parish are listed in these books as belonging to the Lipovitsky and Arefinsky parishes. Therefore, it can be assumed that the church and parish in the village of Varezh were established in the 18th century, although the exact date of the church's construction is unknown. According to the preserved church foundation charter, in 1810 there were two wooden churches in Varezh: in honor of the Ascension of the Lord and Archangel Michael.

From 1810 to 1821, a stone church was built in Varezh. Initially, it had two altars: the main one in honor of the Ascension of the Lord and a side altar in honor of Archangel Michael. In 1854, after the village of Novo transferred from the Lipovitsky parish to the Varezh parish, a side altar in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was arranged in the refectory with funds from three peasants.

The church staff included a priest, a deacon, and a psalmist. Their maintenance was ensured by an income of up to 1800 rubles per year from various sources. The homes of the clergy members were located on church land.

The land holdings of the church included 2280 square fathoms of estate land, the Berezino wasteland covering 50 desyatinas, unusable land under ravines and water sources, 20 desyatinas, as well as hayfields, 3.5 desyatinas.

The parish included the village of Varezh and the villages of Lokhan, Yurevets, Gorbanovo, Chiryevo, and Novo, where the clerical records listed 1230 men and 1299 women.

In the village of Varezh, there were zemstvo and church-parish schools, which educated 90 and 47 students, respectively. In the village of Chiryevo, there was also a literacy school, where 19 people studied in 1896.

Currently, the village of Varezh is part of the Pavlovsky district.
