The village of Krasnomylsk, formerly known as Krasnomyskskaya sloboda, was founded in 1674. Its founders were a white-caped Cossack from Shadrinskaya sloboda named Mishka and a dragoon named Afonka Pervushin. Soon, several settlements emerged on the lands of the sloboda. In 1732, according to a Senate decree, the sloboda was assigned to the Yekaterinburg mining plants for work.
Simultaneously with the establishment of the sloboda, the Krasnomysksky parish was created, which included not only the village itself but also the villages of Sergeeva, Borovaya, Obukhova, Ermakova, and Maksimova. Some parishioners lived in the Old Believer settlement of Pogaday, almost adjacent to the last three villages. In 1834, the parish had 3,888 parishioners, including 1,924 men and 1,964 women.
The first church in the village of Krasnomysksk was wooden and consecrated in honor of Athanasius and Cyril, the Patriarchs of Alexandria. It is believed that its construction coincided with the founding of the village, although exact data is lacking. Before the church was consecrated, there was a chapel on the territory of the sloboda, according to local tradition.
In 1755, the villagers began constructing a new wooden church in honor of the Ascension of the Lord. The old church in the name of Saints Athanasius and Cyril was decided to be rebuilt and insulated for winter services, while the new one would be used in summer. The renovated church was consecrated in 1771. In 1820, it was decided to replace both churches with a new stone two-story church. The construction went successfully: in 1821, the altar of the lower floor was consecrated in honor of St. Sergius of Radonezh, and in 1822, the main altar in honor of Athanasius and Cyril. The upper floor was completed and consecrated in 1848 in honor of the Ascension of the Lord.
The church was distinguished by its majestic appearance, especially its tall and sturdy bell tower. The iconostasis in the upper church was made in the Byzantine style. The iconostasis in the Sergius chapel was likely acquired from an ancient church or transferred from the previous church. The old-timers noted its age by the unrenovated side wall. The iconostasis in the Athanasius chapel was carved in the Rococo style and was distinguished by its artistry.
The territory of the Athanasius church was enclosed by a stone fence with wrought iron grilles made locally. On the corners of the western side of the fence were two stone outbuildings for storing church property. The church owned three wooden houses for the clergy, as well as a literacy school and a district primary school.
The church existed until the mid-1920s but was closed during the period of anti-religious campaigns. The iconostases were destroyed, and valuable icons and church utensils were taken to Sverdlovsk for melting down. Thus, another cultural monument and center of education disappeared.
In 2010, a new single-story church of the Ascension of the Lord was built in the village of Krasnomylsk thanks to the efforts of local parishioners. In the first years, services were mainly held during the warm season until engineering communications were established. Now, church services are held here year-round.
