Before the revolution, the village of Kochkar was not just a small settlement, but a thriving merchant community with a population of about three thousand people. It had a post office, telegraph, and even its own theater.

The church in Kochkar was considered one of the richest in Russia, as its construction was financed by the Plasov merchants: N. Lukin, G. N. Kormiltsev, and E. M. Simonov. Simonov also built a mining church and a parish school. All the chandeliers, crosses, and candlesticks in the temple were made of gold.

The Ascension Church was built between 1863 and 1867. The priest of the church was Viktor Agrov.

The church allocated 50 rubles annually for the maintenance of the Chelyabinsk Spiritual School. According to I. S. Yershov, the church had three bell towers with 12 bells: six large and medium ones, which were also used to alert about fires and during blizzards, and six small ones that rang on holidays. There were three burials near the church: of two priests and merchant N. A. Lukin, who contributed a significant portion of the funds for the church's construction.

The Soviet government did not spare the church. In 1933, it was closed overnight, the rector was shot, the doors were boarded up, the bells were thrown down and melted, the bell towers were dismantled, and the brick fence was destroyed.

Later, the building without its domes was used as a grain storage facility, dance club, and cinema.

In the early 90s, the Orthodox community showed interest in the fate of the church, and ZAO 'Yuzhuralzoloto' provided assistance. However, the attempt to restore it was unsuccessful due to a lack of funds.

In 2003, the restoration of the Holy Ascension Church finally began. To restore its original appearance, they referred to blueprints from the Moscow State Archive. The church received new domes and seven bells, cast in Kamensk-Uralsky. The largest bell weighs 340 kg, while the smallest weighs 6 kg.

The restoration took two years. On December 14, 2005, Metropolitan of Chelyabinsk and Zlatoust Ioann consecrated the renovated church, and on December 17, the first service was held in the church.
