Church of the Ascension of the Lord in Goritsy

Фото 1
The Church of the Ascension is a modest low-rise building with original facade decor in the style of mature classicism. Many openings, especially on the southern side, have been rebuilt. The main square, slightly elongated along the transverse axis, is topped with five cupolas on faceted blind drums, which are widely spaced on the sloping roof. It is adjoined by a lowered and slightly narrowed semicircular apse and an elongated refectory, in the center of the western wall of which is a small narthex. The facades are adorned with narrow pilasters flanking the rounded corners and an entablature with dentils resting on them. The side facades of the square have an unusual composition: they are divided by a pilaster into two sections with rectangular windows below and round false windows in place of the second light openings. The refectory has a similar facade division; its windows, like those on the square, are framed with architraves with ears and keystones, but the arched lintels are replaced with straight ones. The edges of the drums are decorated with niches of false windows. The square is covered with a vaulted ceiling and connected by wide arched openings to the apse and refectory. In the apse, illuminated by three windows, is the conch, while in the refectory, there is a low barrel vault.
