Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Vozdvizhenskoye

Фото 1
The rural parish church, built in 1799 with funds from parishioners, has a main altar consecrated in honor of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. In the refectory part, there was a winter church dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker.

The Vozdvizhenskaya church is a pillarless refectory-type temple with a bell tower above the western entrance. The two-light square-like base is covered by a vaulted ceiling. To the east, it adjoins a lowered polygonal apse, and to the west, a spacious refectory, equal in area to the base. The facade decor appears archaic and provincial: paired corner pilasters are elongated and almost merge into one element. Arched windows are adorned with baroque frames with "ears" and "pendants," and above each opening rises a sandrik in the form of a steep arch. These elements are characteristic of the mid-18th century, which can be explained by the church's location in a small village. The cornice of the base, made of brick like the other decorative elements, is closest to the classical era. It is possible that the church's crowning was more austere, but its absence leaves this assumption as mere speculation. Only the first tier of the bell tower above the narthex has survived. Based on the existing columns, it can be assumed that the western part of the church most closely corresponded to the style of its time. The brick columns have entasis and profiled bases. Entrance to the church was through wide arched openings located on three sides of the lower tier of the bell tower.

There was a cemetery and several buildings near the church: a house for the priest, a house for the psalmist, and a church parish school. In addition to the residents of Vozdvizhenskoye, parishioners included those from neighboring villages such as Ochapki, Yakimtsevo, and Bakunikh, totaling about 400 people at the beginning of the 20th century.

The church was closed and looted in 1931, and in 1932 the bell tower was blown up, as the bricks were needed for building stoves in the barracks of the hydroelectric power station workers. Around the same time, the marble and granite tombstones of the cemetery were looted, and in the 1950s, abandoned gardens appeared on its site.

In 1933, a kindergarten for 60 children was opened in the decapitated church; later, a nursery group and a children's clinic were added, and in 1935, the kindergarten was moved to a specially adapted barrack.

During the Great Patriotic War, the church housed an officers' mess, and after the war, it successively accommodated a dairy factory, a tin workshop, and a residential building. In the second half of the 20th century, a waiting room for steamboats was added to the southern side of the church, and there was a pier by the church. By the 1990s, the church building was abandoned, and the vaults of the base and refectory collapsed.

In such a ruined state, the church, which is a monument of history and culture, remains to this day.
