Next to Matarin is the village of Klimotino, which was previously a settlement. This village housed the Old Believer Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. In 1939, the church building was converted into an incomplete secondary school. The decision was made quickly and without much difficulty. In the "Book of Protocols of the Presidium of the Gorodets District Executive Committee" for 1939, it is recorded: "Heard about the liquidation of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in the village of Klimotino of the Klimotino Village Council. It was decided to agree with the decision of the Klimotino Village Council and the demands of the collective farmers. The Old Believer Church of Klimotino is to be liquidated with subsequent conversion into an incomplete secondary school." A similar fate befell many other churches in the late 1930s, when they were repurposed into schools, clubs, or even used as collective farm warehouses.
