In 1884, a stone building of a three-altar church was constructed in the parish of the Peter and Paul Church, located on Exaltation Street (now Sverdlova), between 2nd Stepnaya, Pioneer, and Middle Stepnaya Streets, designed for a thousand worshippers. The area of the building was 1400 square meters.

The construction was funded partly by the Pokrovsky rural community and partly by donations from the faithful. The main altar of the church was consecrated in honor of the Exaltation of the Honorable and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, the right altar in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord and the holy righteous Prince George, and the left in honor of the Lord's Precursor John and the Venerable Seraphim of Sarov. The church was served by Priest Vasily Krylov and the rector Sergey Alexandrovich Belov, who was entered into the third part of the noble genealogy book of Saratov province on March 30, 1898, by the decision of the Saratov Deputies Assembly, as well as Mikhail Ivanovich Kleandrov. In 1902, the local parishioner Ignaty Ivanovich Chaban became the church elder. By 1912, the parish had 1,062 households, 5,224 peasants, 21 clergy, and 72 townspeople. The first church-parish school opened on September 20, 1887, in a house owned by the church trusteeship and was maintained by the Pokrovsky rural community. Later, it was transformed into a women's school, and on October 1, 1907, a ministerial two-class male school was opened from the zemstvo school.

On April 23, 1929, the presidium of the Pokrovsky City Council considered the issue of seizing the building of the Exaltation Church for the placement of a vocational technical school. On April 23, 1930, the use of church buildings subject to seizure was discussed again at a regular meeting of the city council. Nemgosstroy proposed to present an estimate for the conversion of the Exaltation Church first into a workshop, and in March 1931, into a kitchen factory. In 1936, the church building was destroyed.
