Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Фото 1
The five-domed Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, built in 1776 with funds from parishioners, was dismantled in 1974, with only its 19th-century northern chapel remaining. To the east is a long two-story almshouse, erected in the 19th century as a cell building for a planned but never established monastery. Later, the building was converted into a zemstvo school. A stone fence surrounded the buildings, but only a chapel to the west of the almshouse remains. All structures are made of brick and plastered. Several old linden trees have survived on the cemetery grounds.

The bell tower of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross has survived to a height of two tiers, with only a fragment of the third remaining. A part of the northern chapel, built simultaneously with the bell tower, has also survived. Despite its poor condition, this is an expressive monument of mature classicism. The tiers of the bell tower, square in plan and similar in area, have different facade designs. The lower tier is strict, with a wide arch flanked by flat paired pilasters. It is possible that a wider six-column portico with a high pediment and arch adjoined it from the west. The second tier, with high arches, is more plastic, each arch framed by half-columns and three-quarter columns at the corners. The triangular pediment above the entablature adjoins the base of the third tier, which is decorated more modestly. Above was an attic with round openings for skylights. Inside the bell tower were wooden ceilings, and fragments of 19th-century ornamental painting and inscriptions about the history of the Life-Giving Cross have survived.

From the chapel, the northwestern corner has survived, allowing us to judge the facades, which are similar to the bell tower but with different motifs. Columns of the portico likely stood before the paired pilasters. The vertical orientation of the side window is supported by a board overlay with a sandrik on brackets. The almshouse is an example of a large residential building in the late classicism style. In the 19th century, it received a two-story extension along the eastern facade, which included a corridor with staircases and replaced the original stair extensions. In the 20th century, one-story brick volumes were added from the north and east. On the western facade, facing the temple, the central part is highlighted by a risalit, above which rises a triangular pediment with a semicircular window. The lower windows are rectangular, while the upper ones are elongated vertically. On the end walls, the axis is marked by false windows. The eastern facade has retained its strictness, with the upper openings having a semicircular top.
