Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Verkhoturye

Фото 1
The Church of the Resurrection of Christ is an important stage in the development of Ural cult architecture and one of the first examples of high-level classicism. It is built in two tiers: the lower tier houses the altar in the Name of the Renewal of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, consecrated in 1786, while the upper tier contains the altar in the Name of the Uncreated Image of the Savior, consecrated in 1806. The differences in their styles can be explained by the fact that the lower tier was likely created by folk craftsmen without design drawings, while the upper tier was executed according to an architectural project that utilized advanced forms of the time, transitioning from classicism to empire, taking into account the composition of the first tier.

In 1836, architect Kruglyashev from the Perm Treasury Chamber proposed to redesign the first floor so that the facades would be in a unified style and to add a two-story narthex and an open gallery with Doric columns from the west. In 1839, the project was reviewed in St. Petersburg but was not implemented. It is possible that the addition was meant to strengthen the bell tower, as its foundation was already experiencing load difficulties at that time. Cracks appeared in the walls of the refectory, as confirmed by recent excavations. Presumably, in the 1930s, the church's completion and the bell tower were dismantled.

The Church of the Resurrection of Christ is a two-story three-part "ship" temple, popular in the Urals in the 17th century, like the John the Baptist and Znamenskaya churches in Verkhoturye. However, its composition and decoration incorporate innovations: the apse is made in the shape of a rectangle and a semi-oval, instead of the traditional small octagon, a drum-rotunda with a dome, and the bell tower consists of cubic and cylindrical tiers topped with a dome.

The decor of the first floor, including pilasters and flat lintels, reflects the influence of metropolitan baroque, unlike previous Verkhoturye churches. The second floor is designed in a strict classicist style with rectangular window openings and a Doric frieze. Although some elements of the monument may have analogues, such as triangular pediments, they are found in the Church of the Nativity of Christ in the village of Deryabino. The upper cylindrical tier with a clock and spire, like that of the Nikolskaya church in the village of Byn'gi, is also rare for the Urals.
